GCSO PRESS RELEASE
August 20, 2026

On June 23, 2026, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) and the Special Problems Enforcement and Response (SPEAR) Task Force responded to the Dry Creek Fire on West Mamm Creek Road and Gage Road. The fire burned the residence, vehicle, trailers, and outbuildings at 899 Gage Road. A contractor hired to sandblast and stain the residence also lost all of their equipment and enclosed trailer.

SPEAR Task Force officers (TFOs) and GCSO investigators worked with fire inspectors and specialists from Colorado River Fire Rescue and the Bureau of Land Management, as well as Xcel Energy linemen, to determine a point of origin and cause for the fire. Through multiple interviews, SPEAR TFOs were able to identify the person and a pattern of negligence responsible for starting the fire.

A sworn statement of facts has been submitted to the Ninth District Attorney’s Office for review and filing of charges. Because this is an active criminal case and charges are pending through the DA’s office, no further information will be released regarding this case.

SPEAR is a multi-jurisdictional task force based out of Garfield County, comprised of local and federal law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information on criminal activity is encouraged to reach out to SPEAR through your local law enforcement agency or Dispatch at 970-625-8095.
