US judge rules Trump administration cannot block funds for childcare

(MENAFN) A federal judge in the United States has temporarily prevented the Trump administration from withholding federal funds for child care and social service programs in five Democratic-led states.

US District Judge Arun Subramanian, appointed by former President Joe Biden, issued a temporary order, stating that the states had demonstrated sufficient legal justification “to protect the status quo” for at least 14 days while the case moves through the courts.

The affected states—California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York—receive more than $10 billion annually from three major programs: the Child Care and Development Fund, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and the Social Services Block Grant.

The US Department of Health and Human Services had announced a pause in funding, citing “reason to believe” that the states were providing benefits to undocumented individuals. The agency, however, did not provide evidence or explain why only these five states were targeted. Critics argue that the administration is intentionally singling out Democratic-led states, including restricting disaster aid and closing important government offices.

“The government’s actions are creating operational chaos,” said Jessica Ranucci, a lawyer from the New York Attorney General’s Office. She noted that several states had already faced funding delays and warned that families and child care providers could experience uncertainty if access to these funds is limited.

The federal government had requested detailed information, including names and Social Security numbers of benefit recipients dating back to 2022. State officials contend that this demand is politically motivated and unconstitutional, emphasizing that safeguards are already in place to prevent fraud.
